Zaptec chargers now feed session data into Paua's UK fleet reimbursement platform
Paua and Zaptec announced a partnership on September 7, 2026 that connects Zaptec's charger hardware to Paua's fleet charging payment platform in the UK. Zaptec chargers share charging session data with Paua using their built-in energy meters, letting businesses calculate charging costs against an employee's own electricity tariff and reimburse home charging through what both companies describe as an HMRC-compliant process.
Two Zaptec models are named: the Go 2, built for home charging by company car and van drivers and Vehicle-to-Grid ready, and the Pro, aimed at workplaces, depots and commercial sites with dynamic load balancing across multiple chargers. "Fleet electrification should be an operational advantage, not an administrative burden," said Niall Riddell, Paua's CEO and co-founder. Albert Parnell, Zaptec's head of partnerships, said fleet managers need charging solutions as flexible as how their drivers operate.
Neither company's announcement names the protocol carrying the session data between charger and platform. It is the third bilateral fleet-charging integration announced in as many weeks: Andersen EV with Rightcharge in late August, Zaptec with Kraken for energy-supplier tariffs days earlier, now Zaptec with Paua for reimbursement. Plugchoice forwards each MID-metered session it manages to whichever billing party a site chooses, one standard shape regardless of charger brand, so a fleet is not locked into pairing brand-specific hardware with brand-specific reimbursement software.
Zaptec plugs its chargers into Kraken, and lock-in moves up to the energy platform
Zaptec has partnered with Kraken, the energy technology platform built by Octopus Energy Group, to connect its EV chargers to intelligent tariffs, solar integration and vehicle-to-grid services, the companies announced on September 2, 2026. "The role of the EV charger is changing," said Zaptec CEO Kurt Østrem. "Customers are no longer choosing hardware alone; they're choosing the technology that will continue to deliver value throughout its lifetime." Kraken's Chief Flexibility and Marketing Officer, Devrim Celal, described it as combining "Kraken's flexibility capabilities with Zaptec's charging technology" to reach more customers.
Zaptec's own announcement names no utility that will actually offer these services to drivers. Trade outlet EV Infrastructure News, reporting on September 4, named EDF Energy, Octopus Energy and E.ON Next as utilities running Kraken's platform that could extend connected energy services to Zaptec owners, a claim that outlet makes, not the two partner companies themselves. Neither source describes the protocol carrying data between charger and platform.
It is another sign that the charger is becoming one endpoint inside somebody else's energy platform, one layer up from the hardware itself. On Plugchoice, the OCPP layer that runs smart charging sits underneath whichever backend a driver's supplier prefers, not tied to a single utility, so switching supplier does not mean switching hardware.
Zaptec's Benelux revenue more than doubled in a quarter Alfen's charging arm shrank
Zaptec reported its second quarter on August 19. Revenue of 506 MNOK against 383 MNOK a year earlier, EBITDA of 69 MNOK at a 14 percent margin against 44 MNOK and 11 percent, order intake of 894 MNOK and a backlog of 1,119 MNOK. Gross margin held at 41 percent. Available liquidity stood at 715 MNOK after paying a 175 MNOK dividend, two kroner a share.
The regional split is the part that lands closest to home. In Zaptec's three largest markets, year on year for the quarter:
- Benelux: +117%
- Sweden: +26%
- Norway: +2%
Germany, outside that top three, grew 197 percent, which the company attributes to installer adoption, wider distribution and the first deliveries under its Sonepar partnership. Zaptec counted over 82,000 installations across Europe in the quarter, with a June record of close to a thousand a day.
For context, this is the same half-year in which Alfen's EV charging revenue fell 17.4 percent and its charge point volumes fell 12.3 percent. Two makers, one market, opposite directions. Demand for AC charging in the Benelux is not the variable that moved.
The sentence in the board's own report
Buried in the half-year statement, past the highlights, is this:
The Group's growth and investments are in line with previously communicated outlook, however the ramp-up of sales in certain markets, e.g. France and Germany, has been somewhat slower than previously anticipated due to prolonged time frames to adapt the Group's product offerings to relevant regulatory law and regulations.
A company growing 197 percent in Germany is saying that market took longer than it should have, and the reason is that the product had to be adapted to each country's rules before it could sell there.
That is worth sitting with, because it is a hardware company describing a hardware constraint. Grid codes, metering law, installation standards and grant conditions differ per country. When those differences are handled inside the charger, every new market is a product project with a lead time, and every rule change afterwards is a hardware question.
Where the country differences can live instead
The alternative is not that the rules get simpler. It is that fewer of them are baked into the box.
A charger that speaks OCPP and does what the backend tells it can be the same charger in five countries, with the country-specific behaviour configured above it: the load limits, the tariff logic, the reporting, the settlement. That turns a market entry from a hardware timeline into a configuration one, and it means a rule change is a change in software rather than a swap of installed equipment.
This is also why a site that already has mixed hardware is not a problem to be solved. On Plugchoice the management layer runs across brands over OCPP, so a Zaptec, an Alfen and something else on the same car park are managed as one site under one set of rules.
None of this is a criticism of Zaptec's quarter, which is a good one by any reading. It is the shape of the constraint their own board wrote down, and it applies to every maker selling into more than one country.
What to watch next
A backlog of 1.1 BNOK against a 506 MNOK quarter says the demand is booked rather than hoped for. The open questions are whether Germany holds its rate once the Sonepar channel is fully loaded, and whether France recovers now that the regulatory adaptation work is behind it. Both get answered in the Q3 numbers.
Zaptec and Polestar renew and expand their home-charging partnership
Norwegian charger maker Zaptec and Swedish EV brand Polestar announced on July 13, 2026 a two-year extension of their home-charging partnership, first signed in 2024. Under the renewed deal, Zaptec's hardware continues to be offered to Polestar buyers at a reduced upfront cost as part of the car purchase, and the companies are expanding the offer into the Baltics and into markets outside Europe. Zaptec CEO Kurt Ostrem said Polestar owners "expect the driving experience to be matched by the charging experience"; Polestar's Olivier Loedel called the partnership "an important enabler" for a smart, high-quality home charging setup. The two also plan to keep collaborating on bidirectional charging and vehicle-to-grid solutions.
Bundling a specific charger with a car purchase is convenient, but it also ties the buyer to one hardware brand and, by extension, whatever backend that brand runs behind it. So Energy picks the Zaptec Go 2 as its preferred home charger, bundled with a 7.5p/kWh night tariff
UK renewable energy supplier So Energy has named Zaptec's Go 2 its preferred home charger, announced on 8 July 2026 at the Fleet Electrification Forum. The charger is bundled with So Energy's So EV overnight tariff, which prices energy at 7.5p/kWh between midnight and 05:00.
The interesting part is not the hardware but the shape of the deal. An energy supplier and a charger brand pairing a specific home charger with a cheap night rate is exactly the kind of bundling that sits on residential AC terrain, the same ground the Plugchoice OCPP Proxy and home reimbursement flows serve. It is a UK deal, outside the Dutch and German markets we watch most closely, but the pattern travels: whoever owns the tariff increasingly wants to own the charger it runs on. Keeping OCPP access to the charger is what keeps the driver's choice open when those bundles change.
