EV chargers in a building car park

Make your building EPBD-ready, without replacing what you already run

The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive pushes EV charging and smart-charging readiness into Europe's buildings. Plugchoice helps you get there on the chargers and backend you already have.

What EPBD means for buildings with parking

The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) is the EU framework for cutting the energy use of buildings. Its recast brings EV charging into scope: many buildings with parking now need charging points, the cabling to add more later, and chargers that can charge smartly. Exact thresholds depend on the building type and how each country writes the rules into national law.

Tied to parking

Requirements scale with the number of parking spaces and whether the building is new, renovated, residential, or not.

New and existing

Some duties apply at construction or major renovation, others to existing non-residential buildings over time.

Smart-ready, not just present

A socket is not enough. Charging points are expected to support smart charging, so the load can be managed.

What it asks for in practice

The detail sits in national transposition, but the direction is consistent across the directive.

  1. 1

    Charging points

A share of parking spaces gets working EV charging points, more for larger and non-residential car parks.

  2. 2

    Pre-cabling and ducting

Spaces without a charger still need the ducting or cabling, so points can be added without breaking open the car park later.

  3. 3

    Smart charging

Points should be able to start, stop, and modulate charging, so the building can balance load and avoid grid upgrades.

  4. 4

    Non-residential focus

Offices, retail, and other non-residential buildings carry the clearest obligations, including for existing stock.

How Plugchoice helps you get compliant-ready

Plugchoice sits between your chargers and your current backend, so you can meet smart-charging expectations and manage a growing car park without ripping anything out.

Keep your backend

The OCPP proxy adds Plugchoice alongside the system you already use, no rip-and-replace.

Load balancing and managed charging across the whole car park, on any OCPP charger.

Part of a wider picture

EPBD sits next to AFIR and other EU rules. The same setup that makes a building smart-ready also helps with payment and data duties elsewhere.
