Embion EMS now steers chargers through Plugchoice

More sites combine a charger with a home or business battery, solar panels and a grid connection that is already at its limit. On those sites one system has to decide where the power goes in the whole building.
The Embion EMS is such a system, and it now connects to Plugchoice. Through the Plugchoice OCPP proxy, Embion steers most OCPP chargers on Plugchoice, depending on model and firmware, without the owner switching charger or backoffice.
About Embion
Embion builds an energy management system in Tilburg, the Netherlands. One controller on site follows how much power is generated, stored, used and exchanged with the grid, around the clock, and keeps the site within the limits of its connection. The EMS is brand-independent: it steers chargers, batteries, solar panels and heat pumps together, also on dynamic energy prices, to avoid peak costs and grid congestion. In the Embion Hub the owner sees what each asset uses and produces in real time.
Embion announced the integration on its own blog.
How it works
A charger speaks OCPP to one backoffice. Plugchoice relays that connection to several parties at once. Embion sets how much power the charger draws and when, and the charge point operator's backoffice stays connected for billing and access.
Once the Embion EMS is connected, it takes over the charging control, and Plugchoice handles the connection to the charger. One system controls the charger, so two control loops never work against each other. The owner keeps using the Plugchoice app to operate the charger and follow transactions and consumption.
Why we built it
Tijn de Rivecourt, co-founder of Plugchoice, explained the choice to Embion (translated from Dutch):
"A charger stands on its own less and less and becomes part of a larger energy system. Without an EMS like Embion, Plugchoice would be missing an important piece of that system."
"For us it means we can keep doing what we are good at, connecting and managing chargers, and leave the energy management of the building to a party that specialises in it."
Load management in Plugchoice is made for the charger itself, and for a site with only a charger that is often enough. The Embion EMS takes over when a battery or more solar panels are added, or when the grid is congested.
For installers
Embion can also connect to a charger directly over Modbus. That needs a cable between charger and EMS, and not every site or charger allows one. Through Plugchoice the connection runs through the cloud, and the charger only needs internet access.
A site can start with a charger alone and add a battery or solar panels later. The charger stays on the wall and the Embion EMS takes over the control. Plugchoice runs on ISO 27001:2022-certified data centres in the EU.
