In short
- Does charging count?
- No scheme for charging
- Do measured kWh from a home charger count?
- No
- Since when?
- There is no scheme for charging.
The scheme
- Name
- Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation
- Who earns
- Nobody: electricity is not a fuel under the RTFO. A scheme that let charging count in 2019 and 2020, home charging included, was revoked on 1 January 2024.
Other rules for charging
- Employer reimbursement of home charging
- Reimbursing home electricity for a company car is free of income tax and National Insurance if it can be shown that it was only for that car; no meter or method is prescribed.
- Other schemes and rules
- A draft regulation would require a calibrated class B meter in every private charger from 31 December 2027 (Energy Smart Appliances Regulations, draft).
What Plugchoice does here
Plugchoice records each session per charger with kWh and exports it as CSV, Excel or PDF, as supporting evidence for an employer's reimbursement.
