Alfen builds its ISO 15118 implementation on Pionix's open-source EVerest stack
Alfen, the Dutch maker of chargers and grid equipment, announced on October 28, 2026 that it is scaling its partnership with Pionix, the German software company that started EVerest. Alfen is implementing EVerest, an open-source charging stack hosted by LF Energy, part of the Linux Foundation, and says it wants to build "an industry-leading implementation of ISO 15118" on it. The release covers home, business and public charging, but names no models and no dates for when the software reaches Alfen products.
EVerest includes ISO 15118-2 and ISO 15118-20, the standards behind Plug and Charge, and OCPP 1.6, 2.0.1 and 2.1 for the link to the backend. According to the release, EVerest is the first software stack to receive Plug and Charge pre-certification from Hubject. Plugchoice manages chargers of many brands over OCPP.
What it means
Open firmware on the charger does not settle who runs the charger. Plug and Charge also needs the backend to handle contract certificates, as we wrote when it came to AC charge points. For everything else, an Alfen charger that speaks OCPP 1.6 can be managed from any OCPP 1.6 backend, including Plugchoice, with smart charging running in the platform rather than on the charger. More on the range: the Alfen charger hub.
