Belgium misses RED III deadline as charging e-credits fall from 18 to 5 euros
Belgium has still not written the EU's renewable energy directive RED III into national law, although the deadline passed on May 21, 2025. On October 29, 2026, the Belgian industry association EV Belgium warned that the delay is costing the charging sector money, Solar365 reported. According to EV Belgium, the value of an e-credit fell over the past year from about 18 euros to 5 euros, roughly from 7 to 2 euro cents per kWh of renewable electricity.
EV Belgium estimates the sector will miss about 4 million euros in 2026, rising to more than 27 million euros by the end of 2027 if nothing changes. It asks the federal government to bring the new rules into force by January 1, 2027 at the latest, retroactively if needed, with targets high enough to hold the credit value, room for both public and private charge points, and credits based on the renewable electricity actually delivered. "That delay has an economic price," said director Philippe Vangeel. The Netherlands and Germany have already adapted their transport rules to RED III. Plugchoice records the charging sessions behind such credits.
What it means
Credit income in a charger business case depends on rules the owner does not control. Until those rules are in place, the owner can keep the data ready: metered sessions per charge point, in one place. The Plugchoice carbon credits overview shows per country where a scheme already exists.
