EU Parliament committee backs faster permits for EV charging stations

The European Parliament's industry committee (ITRE) has adopted its position on the permit-acceleration file in the European Grids Package and voted to open negotiations with the Council. For charging, the text would remove the permit requirement for recharging stations up to 1 MW installed on artificial structures, raise the permit threshold from 100 kW to 200 kW, and cap approvals for stations up to 1 MW at three months.

Lighter permitting means less friction to put chargers in the ground, a demand tailwind for everyone deploying on business and residential sites. The usual caveat applies: this is a committee position, with a plenary vote and trilogue negotiations still to come, so it is a direction of travel rather than enacted law.
