The Open Charge Alliance (OCA), the industry body that maintains OCPP, submitted a response on July 30, 2026 to the European Commission's public consultation on a revised Network Code on Requirements for Grid Connection of Generators. The consultation closes August 25, 2026.
The OCA's ask is specific: name IEC 63584, the international standard version of OCPP 2.1, as the communication protocol between vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charge points and system operators, and reference the OCPP 2.1 Certification Programme in the national compliance schemes that Article 49 of the code requires. Its stated reasoning is about fragmentation rather than promotion: without a specified interface, individual grid operators could each set their own technical and security requirements for V2G equipment, the same problem OCPP was built to solve between chargers and back offices in the first place.
Nothing here is settled. This is one industry body's submission to a consultation that is still open, the Commission has not responded, and there is no timeline for when or whether it will act on the request. If the recommendation is adopted, it would move an OCPP-based back office from being the practical default most operators already run to a named compliance requirement for any site doing V2G. For now it is a proposal, not a rule, and Plugchoice's back office already runs on OCPP regardless of how the consultation lands.
